Edmond Thornfield’s Atalanta of the Wild is a gorgeous mythological romance, and Atalanta is a heroine I would honestly have followed anywhere. Thornfield uses a modern recreation of Early Modern English, including spellings like “princesse.” Present-tense viewpoints alternate between Atalanta and Néos, giving the novel the sound of an old legend spoken aloud. I loved it, but it may prove cumbersome for readers looking for a less academic format. I admired Atalanta’s nerve, captured perfectly as she feigned interest in two predatory centaurs long enough to retrieve her bow and guarantee her safety. The imagery is absolutely gorgeous, and Thornfield shines in making Periklos playing Artemis’s swan flute and river nymphs rising against circling lionesses so visual. Wholly unique and immersive, readers who adore literary Greek myth retelling in the classical style will adore this.
